Botox & Dysport
combat the first visual signs of ageing....
What are Botox and Dysport?
Botox is a form of botulinum toxin that has been modified for cosmetic purposes and has a long medical history of safe and effective use in the treatment of muscular problems related to certain neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. It is only in the last few years, however, that its cosmetic application has been developed. As we get older, our skin begins to show signs of sagging, fine lines and deeper ‘animation’ wrinkles which are caused by repeated movement of the facial muscles. We develop our patterns of facial movement during childhood and these continue subconsciously throughout our lives contributing to the development over time of deeper wrinkles such as frown lines. Botox is particularly effective on these wrinkles as it not only relaxes the muscle but also functions to prevent muscle contraction thereby preventing the formation of new wrinkles. Dysport is an injectible used to paralyse the muscles that control sweating and is very effective in the treatment of hyper-hydrosis.
Are they safe? How do they Work?
They are injected right into the muscle to paralyse it. Results are evident after a single injection and last up to 6 months. It may take between 5-7 days for the botox to take effect. Some patients with powerful muscles may not see complete relaxation of the targeted area but subsequent treatments will further weaken them.
Where can they be used?
Botox can be used on frown lines, glabella lines (the deep crease between the eyebrows), crow’s feet, wrinkles around the eyes and horizontal forehead lines. Botox can also be used for excessive sweating.
What does the treatment feel like?
This is a relatively fast and painless treatment which involves a number of injections into the selected muscle groups. Most patients compare the sensation to a tiny pinching feeling, however no local anaesthetic is required.
What after care is needed?
Some patients may experience mild swelling which will disappear after 24-48 hours – this can easily be concealed with make-up and patients can return to normal daily activities immediately.
How long will the effects last?
The effects last approximately 4 months as the botox gradually biodegrades in the skin and will be reabsorbed by the body.
Can this treatment be used with Restylane, Perlane or laser treatment?
Botox does work with additional treatments and in the case of Restylane/Perlane the effects tend to last longer. This is because the continuous muscle movement is eliminated thus slowing the body’s ability to break down the injected product.
How often should I have the treatment done?
To maintain the desired results, injections should be repeated at regular intervals. Your Otto Clinic Consultant will advise you of the treatment frequency required, depending on your skin condition, to maintain your improved appearance.
Who is not suitable? Are there any side effects?
Allergic reactions are rarely a problem with injectable hyaluronic acid and since it is derived from a non-animal source, no pre-treatment skin test is required.
