What are Laser Pigmentation Treatments?

As we get older, particularly in our 30's and 40's, we begin to notice pigmentation, age spots, freckles, sun spots and general sun damage occurring on our skin.  These dark patches which may vary in size are known technically as hyperpigmentation.  They are caused by over-production of melanin due to long-term exposure to ultraviolet light and other environmental or lifestyle factors.  Key areas affected are usually the face, neck, chest, hands and forearms which are constantly exposed.  At The Otto Clinic we use the highly effective Alexandrite Nd:YAG laser system which can provide a permanent solution or vastly improve these problems.  The Alexandrite Nd: YAG is also very effective for hair and vein removal - see our laser hair removal and laser vein removal pages for more information.

Laser therapy uses focussed light - the laser delivers light pulses to the problem area in powerful beams, allowing the practitioner to penetrate deeply into tissue to work very precisely on specific areas without damaging surrounding cells.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Laser Pigmentation Treatments Safe?

Our laser procedures are non-invasive and offer dramatic and permanent results after only a few treatments. This is because we use one of the leading market devices - the Alexandrite Nd:YAG laser which is FDA approved. This laser technology is one of the safest and most effective laser machines available. Unlike rival devices, the Alexandrite Nd:YAG contains not one, but two laser systems ensuring that even the most stubborn cases can be treated effectively. Furthermore, the Alexandrite Nd:YAG has a patented cooling device, SmartCool, which produces a continuous flow of chilled air to protect tissue and skin from possible thermal damage, significantly reducing discomfort and enabling quick client recovery. In short, this is a safe, fast and effective treatment that won’t interfere with your busy life!

How Do Laser Pigmentation Treatments Work?

The science behind laser pigmentation removal is simple: laser technology uses powerful light pulses to selectively destroy diseased cells by targeting the melanin in them. The laser produces a wavelength of high energy light which is then converted into heat energy. This can target the specific area of pigmentation because the laser is absorbed only by cells containing excessive pigmentation. This efficiently destroys the diseased or pigmented cells while leaving surrounding tissue undamaged.

Where Can Laser Pigmentation Treatments Be Used?

The Alexandrite Nd:YAG can be used all over the face and body. Additionally the Alexandrite Nd:YAG's dual wavelength system allows it to safely and effectively treat the darkest skin tones - the Nd:YAG laser has a long wavelength which is highly sensitive to all colour and melanin, meaning it can penetrate damaged tissue more precisely without affecting surrounding tissue.

What Does The Treatment Feel Like?

Patients describe each pulse to feel like the snapping of a rubber band against the skin and, whilst mildly uncomfortable, is not painful. Your clinic consultant can use a local anaesthetic cream to numb the area but it is generally not necessary. Skin surface cooling is applied through the use of the system's patented SmartCool technology ensuring you will be comfortable during your treatment.

How Long Will The Effects Last?

Following an in-depth consultation, your therapist will advise on the best course of treatments depending on the type of pigmentation and the area to be treated in order to achieve permanent pigment removal. The Alexandrite Nd:YAG system is so effective that it permanently reduces pigmentation by an average of 79% after only 3 sessions.
NOTE: It is therefore essential that clients complete the recommended course of treatments for best i.e. permanent results

What After-Care Is Needed?

Patients can resume regular activities immediately following treatment. An icepack can be applied to soothe the treated area although any discomfort usually disappears in 24 hours. Aloe Vera is also an excellent choice to soothe the skin. Clients are advised to avoid scrubbing the area and to avoid the use of abrasive skin cleaners.
NOTE: It is vital that clients protect the area from sun exposure by using sun screen even in the winter and avoiding exposure of the area to the sun for at least 4 weeks following treatment to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation. Perfumed products, baths, saunas etc. should also be avoided for 12 hours following treatment.

How Often Should I Have The Treatment Done?

Laser Pigmentation Removal generally requires a minimum of 3 sessions but this very much depends on the area to be treated, skin colour, gender and any underlying conditions. Therefore, an in-depth consultation is required first with your therapist to determine the correct course of treatments. As a general indication, freckles and small age spots can usually be removed in 3 sessions while several sessions may be required to tackle larger areas. Our therapists generally recommend waiting 3-8 weeks between sessions so that your skin has time to repair the cells - the same area can then be treated again if necessary.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Slight swelling and/or general reddening of the skin may occur after treatment - this will disappear within 24 hours and make-up may also be used to camouflage it. Laser treatments are suitable for all skin types and are an effective, safe and fast way to remove pigmentation permanently with minimal pain and very little recovery downtime.
