Knee & Shoulder Pain PRP Injection

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy is a non-invasive procedure that treats a range of musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries.  PRP injections are particularly successful in the treatment of knee and shoulder pain. As a stand-alone procedure, it reduces pain and promotes healing and rehabilitation without surgery.  It can also be used post-surgery to enhance and speed up the body's healing response.

What Conditions Can PRP Injections Treat?

This is a non-surgical procedure that has a successful, proven track record in treating a range of painful conditions from sports injuries to the chronic pain caused by osteoarthritis and tendinitis.  Here at The Otto Clinic, we use this procedure specifically to treat knee and shoulder joint pain.

The Science Behind It - How Does It Work?

Platelet Rich Plasma injections have many medical applications and have been used as standard practice in maxillo-facial surgery, dentistry, orthopaedics and veterinary medicine since 1987.

Our blood is essentially a liquid plasma in which red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are suspended.  Platelets (also called thrombocytes) are extremely important as their role is to clot blood when injury occurs in order to stop bleeding.  Additionally platelets carry proteins and hormones called human growth factors which are essential for healing injury sites.

In fact, they are a key factor in the shorter healing times and dramatic pain relief associated with PRP injections.  When an injury site is injected with PRP, the high concentration of growth factors kick start the body's natural healing process faster than would normally occur.  Additionally, the growth factors deliver an anti-inflammatory effect and stimulate cell growth while creating a type of scaffolding at the injury site to repair and remodel the injured tissue.  Furthermore, PRP can improve tissue flexibility resulting in cartilage that is more resistant to future wear and tear.

Essentially, more growth factors mean faster healing because when additional growth factors are delivered to the injury site, the body can initiate the healing process without delay.  This effectively ensures better healing and allows the patient to get back to normality sooner.

PRP - The Process

The process of Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is to take a minimal amount of the patients' own blood and pass it through a filtration process to separate the PRP from the blood - it now contains up to 10 times the number of platelets as would be found in a similar sample of blood.  This is the high concentration of growth factors which will be injected back into the injured tissue or joint.  When these are injected, they kickstart the body's natural repair process resulting in:

  • Regeneration of injured tissue

  • Faster pain relief and healing which means shorter recovery time

  • Repair of cartilage

  • Increased function and mobility

  • Strengthening of the weakened tissue

  • Inhibition of the inflammation process

Platelet Rich Plasma is a wonderful, non-surgical alternative to the use of painkillers and other conventional pain treatments.  As it is completely natural and uses your own cells, there is little to no risk of allergic reaction.  There are a number of circumstances where you might consider the use of PRP.

When To Consider PRP?

PRP injections are used to treat a variety of sports injuries and degenerative conditions.  Here are some reasons why you may want to consider the use of PRP:

  • Conventional treatments not effective

  • Reduce pain and improve mobility

  • Avoid surgery or delay it indefinitely

  • Unsuitability for joint replacement

  • Avoid or reduce need for NSAIDS for overall health benefits

  • Due to cardiac conditions, you must avoid NSAIDS completely

  • Some over the counter medications (such as aspirin) can cause stomach ulcers and damage the lining of the small intestine

  • Steroid injections may have side effects such as weight gain, mood swings, excess hair growth, elevated blood sugar levels and skin flushing

  • Use post-surgery to speed up the bodys' natural healing response
