Ultherapy: FAQs

Are Ultherapy Treatments Safe?

Our Ultherapy treatment is non-invasive - we use the FDA approved Ulthera® System which is currently marketed worldwide in more than 60 countries. Over 1 million treatments have been performed globally to date. In addition, ultrasound energy has a scientifically proven track record, with use in the field of medicine for more than 50 years.

This ultrasound technology is one of the safest and most effective ultrasound devices available.

How Do Ultherapy Treatments Work?

Ultherapy gently bypasses the surface of the skin to heat the underlying dermis, delivering the perfect amount of ultrasound energy at the right depth and temperature to trigger the regeneration of fresh, new collagen. It is a very precise treatment and can be used to specifically target the upper and lower face, neck and décolletage to lift, tighten and sculpt where needed.

Where Can Ultherapy Be Used?

Ultherapy can be used all over the face, jawline, neck and décolletage. Ultherapy can help you achieve a fresher, more youthful look from your brow to your chest!

What Does Ultherapy Feel Like? Does it Hurt?

As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you may feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, stimulating the collagen-building process. Comfort levels vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the ultrasound energy is being delivered. Comfort levels can vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the energy is being delivered.

When Will I See Results? How Long Do The Effects Of Ultherapy Last?

Some patients may see an initial effect immediately after their treatment, but the real results appear over 2−3 months as new collagen is formed and works to lift and tighten. The rejuvenation effects of an Ultherapy treatment can last from 1 year to 18 months - this very much depends on the patient's skin and degree of skin laxity.

What After-Care Is Needed?

Patients can resume regular activities immediately following treatment. An icepack can be applied to soothe the treated area although any discomfort usually disappears in 24 hours. Aloe Vera is also an excellent choice to soothe the skin. Clients are advised to avoid scrubbing the area and to avoid the use of abrasive skin cleaners.

How Often Should I Have Ultherapy Done?

For most clients, one treatment per annum is sufficient. However, this is also dependent on the condition of the patients' skin, the degree of skin laxity and their biological response to the Ultherapy treatment. Some clients may benefit from additional treatments but this can usually be determined at the consultation stage. As skin continues to age, further touch-up treatments are advisable once yearly in order to keep pace with the body’s natural ageing process.

Are There Any Side Effects?

There may be slight redness that typically resolves within a few hours following the treatment. Some patients may have slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch, but these are mild and temporary in nature.

What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is a procedure that uses micro-focused ultrasound energy to boost the regenerative process within the skin enabling it to kick start production of wonderful, fresh, new collagen and elastin. The ultimate effects of this treatment are that skin tissue is repaired and tightened, lines and wrinkles are dramatically improved resulting in a visibly lifted, younger looking appearance. To date, 1 million treatments have been carried out worldwide with celebrities including Jennifer Anniston and Christie Brinkley attributing their youthful looks to the treatment.

What are Collagen & Elastin?

Collagen and elastin are both important building blocks within our skin. Produced by special cells called fibroblasts, collagen provides strength and stability, while elastin is a highly elastic protein that helps skin to return to its original position after movement. As we age, our skin loses both collagen and elastin which leads to sagging and laxity. Normal daily expression means that our faces are constantly subjected to movement and pressure and over time the loss of elastin and collagen really takes its toll. And why is this important?
Because in order to lift and tighten skin effectively, collagen and elastin production must be stimulated.

Is Ultherapy The Same As a Facelift?

While Ultherapy is not a replacement for a surgical facelift, it is an excellent solution for people who want some facial lifting but are not ready for surgery, whether mentally, physically or financially and for younger people who want to "stay ahead of the game," as well as patients wanting an aesthetic maintenance option. Ultherapy targets the same layer that is lifted and tightened during a facelift. Ultherapy is a clinically proven non-invasive alternative for those who have had a facelift and wish to prolong the results, those considering a facelift but have a fear of needles and surgery, those who are committed to non-invasive skin tightening procedures only and those who are simply not ready to go down the surgical route. Unlike surgery, Ultherapy has the advantage that you can return to your daily activities immediately with no downtime.

Why Do I Need a Consultation?

The initial consultation is hugely important as it helps you ensure that you have chosen the right clinic and the right procedure as well as allowing you to ask as many questions as you need in order to understand the procedure from start to finish. It helps us to establish what your objectives and expectations are so that we can give you the best advice and create the most appropriate treatment plan. In this way, you will feel absolutely secure and confident in your decision. The Otto Clinic consultation is free and entirely without obligation.

How Does Ultherapy Differ From Laser & Other Treatments?

Ultherapy is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production in the skin’s foundation, resulting in a clinically significant lift of tissue over 2-3 months. Lasers rely on light energy, which typically only treat superficial skin (around 1mm in depth), while Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin (going to depths between 1.5mm and 4.5mm), which means no downtime is required after the treatment. Since the two technologies often treat different types of skin issues, they can be compatible. The production of new collagen takes time, so Ultherapy results can become more apparent over two to three months, and sometimes even up to six months. The procedure takes about 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the area treated. It also is the only procedure to use ultrasound imaging, which allows practitioners to actually see the layers of tissue targeted during the treatment and ensure the energy is deposited precisely to where it will be most beneficial.

How Long Does Ultherapy Take?

The length of your treatment will depend on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. A face and neck procedure can typically take 60-90 minutes, while a chest treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.
Certainly if you're averse to surgical treatments, this is a really good alternative, requiring maintenance of only one treatment per year.

Can I Go Straight Back To Work After Ultherapy?

After your Ultherapy treatment, you can resume your activities straight away. There are no special post-treatment measures. Patients with sensitive skin may see some redness but this can be easily covered with foundation.

How Do I Know My Practitioner/Clinic Is Using Genuine Ultherapy?

All practitioners who have purchased the genuine Ultherapy system have been provided with a Certificate of Authenticity - which they should be able to show you in their clinic.

What happens during an Ultherapy Treatment?

The treatment itself starts with the application of ultrasound gel to the skin. Ultrasound imaging is then used to see deep within the skin in order to pinpoint exactly where to treat within the skin. Each treatment is totally unique and tailored to the individual patient. The energy is then applied beneath the skin’s surface using a hand held applicator. During the treatment delivery, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, indicating that the collagen-building process has been initiated.

How Much Does Ultherapy Cost?

Pricing for an Ultherapy® treatment varies depending upon the areas being treated. During our detailed consultation, treatment will be customised to meet your needs - this determines the exact pricing of your treatment.

Does Ultherapy Work For Everyone? Am I A Candidate?

A good candidate for Ultherapy is someone with some degree of laxity, to the point of looking, and often feeling, less firm. Loose skin under the neck and under the chin, or lines and wrinkles on the chest, are signals a patient might be a candidate. Typically, those in their 30s and older who have mild to moderate skin laxity are candidates. While Ultherapy is not a replacement for a surgical facelift, it is a fantastic solution for people who want some facial lifting but are not ready for surgery, whether mentally, physically or financially and for younger people who want to "stay ahead of the game," as well as patients who want an aesthetic maintenance option.
