"The beauty of a woman only grows with passing years” Audrey Hepburn
Have you suddenly spotted new lines or wrinkles that were NOT there before when you look in the mirror? This is probably most likely to happen after a long Summer spent outdoors in the sunshine, exposing our skin to the elements. Ahem ......well that’s assuming we had a Summer with sunshine and also assuming we were able to venture into the great outdoors!!
Seriously though, if you are worried about fine lines and wrinkles, read on because in this week’s post we have put together the go-to rescue package for this all-too-common problem. First, let’s take a quick look at skin and how it ages:
Your Skin is Your Outer Garment:
Skin is the largest organ of the body and is truly fascinating: waterproof, bacteria-resisting and self-repairing, it serves as a protective barrier against the environment and the elements, helping us to maintain a constant body temperature and eliminate toxins from the body! When you think about it, it’s pure genius! And it deserves to be loved, pampered and spoiled!
How Skin Ages:
The face has an “age triangle” – wide eyes, full cheeks and glowing skin down to full lips and a narrow chin. Ageing changes this triangle when the fat, muscle and connective tissue in the cheek area slackens with time and moves downwards, forming fine lines between the nose and mouth and hollows around the eyes and mouth. Jowls become more apparent, widening the chin and forming a noticeably heavier look as we develop expression lines, and the triangle is lost. Thus the following changes occur as we age:
In Your 30’s: fewer growth hormones secreted; decrease in vitamins directed to the skin; skin cells die faster than body can replace them; quality and quantity of connective tissue reduced; fine lines start to form in areas of constant, repetitive movement e.g. mouth and eyes
In Your 40’s: rate at which skin discards dead cells slows down dramatically; skin may look tired and dull; loss of elasticity much more noticeable due to loss of collagen and elastin and declining levels of oestrogen and progesterone; deeper wrinkles begin to form; loss of moisture and vitality may be apparent
In Your 50’s: characterised by the onset of menopause, hormonal secretions drop away; skin becomes thinner and less elastic; reduction in oil gland secretions; there may be bone and muscle loss causing a decrease in structural support; blotches and age spots (which can form in your 30’s and 40’s due to sun exposure) become more prominent.
Guidelines to Daily Anti-Wrinkle Protection:
Daytime:
Use a skin-balancing gentle cleanser to clean your skin, rather than dry it out first thing in the morning.
Your day cream should hydrate and protect your skin from UV damage as well as pollutants, toxins and free radicals.
Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen minimum SPF30 that protects against UVA and UVB rays to protect skin from the damaging effects of the sun.
Top tip: Never exfoliate first thing in the morning, as that can damage your
skin's protective barrier before you head outdoors into pollution, UV rays and other potential skin irritants.
Night-time:
At night your skin repairs and renews, so using the right ingredients will really help this process:
Cleanse thoroughly every night with either a creamy cleanser for dry skin, or a foaming one for oilier skin – this allows your skin to fully absorb your night cream.
Night creams should be rich, nourishing and packed with active ingredients that stimulate cell renewal. Massage the cream into your skin using an upward and outward motion and allow five minutes for it to sink in.
